Jesus said this, “You are the salt of the earth…” What do you think that means?

The other day God spoke something to me as I was going about my own business and He said, “You know you can use salt in any recipe, right?” It took me a minute to realize what He was saying, but He’s right! Imagine that.

What I realized is that salt is an ingredient in just about everything. I think there is still this idea floating around that in order to show people Christ, or in order to “do ministry,” one needs to be a pastor or a missionary or a sunday school teacher. But salt can be added to just about anything and it will always make things better.

On a personal level, I am coming more around to the realization that I don’t need to have all my plans figured out. I don’t need to even always need to know what I am making to add value, I don’t need to have every plan in tidy order. I don’t need to have it all figured out to plant X amount of churches or make X amount of disciples, but I do need to be salt.

The temptation is to control WHAT our job looks like. But Jesus only urges us to control HOW we do our job. One of His last words to Peter was this:

Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” (John 21:18-19)

Today I encourage you, there is no need to get caught up in things you can’t control about your life. And know too that in any situation you can be light. Every recipe needs a little salt.
